Miami Sessions With Rod B. presents Big Daddy Brown MUM episode 214

Rod B. & Mareis bring you the Miami Sessions @ Miami Underground Movement

At 52 years old Dave “Big Daddy” Brown has been around since before the birth of dance music. Or for that matter, punk, reggae, new wave, hard rock, hip-hop, rap and metal. In fact, he came rushing headlong into this world in 1961, the same year Patsy Cline was topping the charts with Willie Nelson’s “Crazy”.

He was ten years old when he bought his first ever record, Led Zeppelin’s immortal classic, “Immigrant Song”, which remains one of his favourite songs of all time. The joy was short-lived though, his mum made him take it back to the record store as it wasn’t considered “appropriate”...but it was cheekily swapped for Deep Purple’s “Demon’s Eye” instead.

Variously falling in love with sounds like Led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, Motorhead, Pantera and Tool, Big Daddy’s die seem cast in either the thrash of punk or the dark grooves of heavy metal. But dabbling in the early ‘90s rave scene in Sydney Australia he became exposed to early psy-trance and acid house.

But it wasn’t until a monumental set by the legendary Carl Cox at Bondi Beach Sydney on NYE 2000 that the die was cast. Within two days Dave had bought his first decks. Absorbing sounds from iconic techno and house DJs like Carl Cox, John Digweed, Green Velvet and Jeff Mills, he started the long and lonely journey of every true DJ, to find his own sound.

Dave’s live sets invariably involve a variety of styles with techno and tech-house as the basis but a preference for dark techno. Well regarded for his programming and immaculate blend mixing his sets are never planned whether live or recorded, believing in the true essence of a “live” performance.

Having played predominantly in Asia, he was offered residencies at the iconic Bed Supperclub and Glow in Bangkok where he successfully pushed a tech-house sound in an electro-house world many years before it before it became fashionable.

However Big Daddy is the antithesis of most DJs and doesn’t seek fame or fortune in any way, in fact he keeps out of the limelight and finds it completely ironic to even have had bio written for him.

He is legendary for turning down gigs to allow younger DJs to take the opportunities available. It’s through this modesty and generosity that he has cheekily become known as “Big Daddy “. Dave is vehement in his belief that music comes first and its future resides with the young.

Well known in the Brisbane (Australia) underground scene, Dave has played alongside some of the biggest names in international techno although he’d never mention names. He currently only plays certain events by invitation from people who know their music.

Knowing that the music will never die, Dave’s plans are to build his own beach-club in Asia in 2015 where he intends to see out his days sharing the music he loves so much without any distractions.

He truly does hope to leave this life in a DJ booth with his headphones still on!

Miami Sessions with Rob B. proudly presents Paolo Mojo - M.U.M Episode 213

Rod B. & Mareis bring you the Miami Sessions @ Miami Underground Movement

Paolo Mojo is firmly established as a leading light on the underground house music scene with a large global following and a consistent production schedule that keeps him in demand all over the world.

A true ‘international’, there are not many countries that haven’t had a touch of the Mojo magic these days. He's earned himself a formidable global fan base thanks to his hectic schedule…Womb in Tokyo, Ministry of Sound in London, Avalon in Los Angeles, Warung Beach in Brazil, Wonderland in Ibiza, Chinese Laundry in Sydney and Zouk in Singapore are just some of the venues he graces consistently.

It’s all built on the back of a consistent, high profile discography.

2011 starts with a bang with the Essential Selection playlisted ‘Mmmm Daaa’ snapped up by legendary house label Strictly Rhythm for a spring release. His much hyped ‘All Night, Alright’ is to be released on hot Italian label 303 Lovers, home of Manuel De La Mare and Alex Kenji, whose remix of the track is under development. Finally his ‘Welcome To the Factory’ sampling track of the same name has been personally approved by Angel Moraes, and is set for a spring release on Dj Chus’ Stereo Music.

2010 saw successful singles released on Noir (Crazy For You) Hysterical (Disco Kiss) and Younan Music (He's The Man). Remixes of Saeed Younan and Rainer Weichold’s for German label Great Stuff followed, as did his well received Foxhunt / Soca! single.

Elsewhere, his track 1983 on Eric Prydz’ Pryda Friends has become a true club classic. He’s also released tracks on Pryda and Mouseville (the only ‘outside’ artist to do so) and a varied and vast list of other labels.. Bedrock, Saved, NRK, Cr2, Toolroom, Renaissance, Great Stuff, Positiva, EQ Recordings, Factomania, Little Mountain, Curfew Nervous, Ego Records.. the list goes on.

At the heart of his work lies his own label Oosh, which over the course of the last three years has landed him two BBC Essential New Tunes and two Beatport overall top ten hits. Pete Tong also named ‘JMJ’ (2007) and ‘Sirena’ (2008) his ‘top tunes of the summer.

The label has expanded to include the cream of house and techno producers such as Wally Lopez, Rene Amesz, DJ Yellow, Noir, Jim Rivers, Juan Sanchez, King Unique, Alan Fitzpatrick and Saeed Younan and the first Paolo Mojo ‘Ten To One’ compilation release will follow in February 2011. His associated podcast Ooshcast has become one of the most popular downloads around since its launch in December 2009.

Its no surprise then, that he was name checked as one of the hottest producers of the year in 2008 by Pete Tong on BBC Radio One, and has scored two well received Essential mixes for Radio One already.

On the compilation front he has been described by IDJ Magazine as ‘the master of the mix cd’ For evidence of this look no further than his award winning Balance 009 for EQ Recordings, now regarded as something of a classic mix compilation, or his Renaissance Digital 001.

With an astonishing work ethic in the studio and his endless special re-edits, he's an innovative DJ whose enviable technical ability and a thriving, huge loyal underground fanbase ensure that he will remain a star of the scene for many years to come.

Miami Sessions with Rod B. presents Andre Crom - M.U.M Episode 210

Rod B. & Mareis bring you the Miami Sessions @ Miami Underground Movement

Andre Crom had an amazing start into 2013: a #1 Beatport Deephouse Charts hit („Teenage Mutants & Andre Crom „Hanging On“).

Besides that, both his label and himself entered the „mostcharted labels/artists of 2012 list of Resident Advisor with # 8 for OFF Recordings and # 40 for Andre Crom

The future does not look bad either: solo shows and label showcases all over the planet are already confirmed, including key events such as Sonar, A.D.E. and several ibiza events.

What's the reason for this popularity? Quite simple, Andre Crom and OFF Recordings release music to give people on the dancefloor a good time.

The sound selection is moving fluidly from sleazy deep underground pop tunes to jacking house to reduced groovers - diversity and fresh trends are welcome and keep things interesting.

The OFF sound, as well as Andre's own productions, take influences from all kinds of musical genres such as disco, 80s pop, jazz, funk, soul, blues, hip hop and techno with house, produced in a modern yet raw, cutting-edge style.

However, it's Andre Crom's sets, playing a mix of his own productions, unreleased OFF signings and carefully selected new tracks, grooving behind the decks just as much as the crowd on the floor – that are the best proof for his deep and profound love for house music and a good party.

Miami Sessions With Rod B. presents Christian Smith Live@Lamouche Quebec - M.U.M Episode 206

Rod B. & Mareis bring you the Miami Sessions @ Miami Underground Movement

Christian Smith has been at the top of his game as a DJ and producer for over a decade, but despite enjoying a global reputation as one of the most evergreen performers in his field, times have never been quite as good as they are right now. Born in Sweden, Christian spent much of his youth and early adult life in Germany and America. This exposure to different cultures gave Christian a broader ou
tlook than most 30-somethings, even for a well-travelled DJ more familiar with Star Alliance lounges than home comforts. This open-minded outlook comes through loud and clear in the music he makes and plays. While his roots lie in techno, Christian has never been a purist; favouring instead to flavour the tough, rhythmical music he loves with heavy doses of funk or intersperse the raw energy of his sets with inspired moments of pure euphoria.

2009 has been quite a ride so far, and the signs are all there that this year will be Christian Smith’s busiest to date. Having recently relocated to Sao Paulo, Brazil from Spain, it would have been easy to lose touch with the scene’s beating pulse in Europe. Not so for the man whose recent production schedule reads like a discography wish list. Christian Smith & John Selway’s “Total Departure” on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label was one of the tunes if 2008. This was followed by three singles for John Digweed’s Bedrock label which were all a massive success in the clubs and retail stores, as were his releases on Dubfire’s Sci+Tec label, Renaissance, and Steve Lawler’s Viva imprint. The Smith & Selway remix of the Kevin Saunderson classic “Rock To The Beat” was another massive success in Ibiza, and there were other superb remixes for Valentino Kanzyani’s Jesus Loves You, Nic Fanciulli’s Saved and Dieb Audio. The end result – over 30,000 downloads on Beatport in 2008.

The second half of 2009 will be dominated by the first in a trilogy of mix compilations for legendary clubbing brand, Renaissance. The release of Christian Smith – Platform in September will put Christian on a footing with other Renaissance acts Sander Kleinenberg, Hernan Cattaneo, James Zabiela and Steve Lawler and provide the continuity for a mammoth 30+ date world tour that will stop off at parties across Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America over the coming months. As a DJ, Christian plays everything between house and techno. Never one for a purist approach, he simply believes that people go out to party. The secret is in the energy that he creates, as witnessed in 2008 at Wire Festival, Tokyo; Brazil’s Skol Beats Festival; Awakenings Festival, Amsterdam (featuring a Smith & Selway live show), Space, Ibiza (with Carl Cox), Ministry Of Sound, London (with Pete Tong); and Fabric’s new uber-cool, Matter alongside John Digweed and James Zabiela.

Honoured as Carl Cox’s “Hero of 2008” and with the success of his productions breeding a renewed energy for studio time, the natural next step was for Christian to re-launch his Tronic label. Kicking off in January with a re-release of the Smith & Selway’s classic “Move!” including chart topping remix from Steve Angello, the label has progressed at a pace to place Christian back at the centre of underground music. Featuring tracks from Umek, Mark Broom, Stryke, Fergie and Psycatron, Tronic has resurfaced with a bang and looks set to track Christian’s personal upward trajectory. Look out for future singles from cutting edge producers including Steve Mac, Ramon Tapia, Jim Rivers and Anton Pieete. With massive crossover support for his music from DJ's across the house and techno spectrum the future looks very certain for Christian Smith. Proof if it was needed that it is possible to reinvent your sound and maintain a position at the very top within the vanguard of electronic music.

Miami Sessions presents Behind the Iron Curtain with: UMEK - Episode 188

DJ UMEK
For a long time, Slovenia is known for its great electronic parties, but as the local scene is of boutique dimensions, everyone, who wishes to take the art of mixing and producing to a professional level, has to go out there and enter the worldwide scene. Umek has done this step as early as in the middle of the 90s and so he became one of the most important techno players of the global techno scene, even before the end of the last millennium. Together with people, who shared the same views, he successfully captured the first era of researching and recreating the rules of the dance music in Recycled Loops, Consumer Recreation and Astrodisco platforms, which all put the sound of the Slovenian techno on the world map of electronic music.

In the beginning of the year 2007, Umek started a new 1605 Music Therapy - Sixteenofive, with which he marked the beginning of the second era of his music creation and what an era it is. 5 highly popular releases on the 1605 label with lots more planned in the next few months, a huge success of the »Day Of Electronics 09« - the main 1605 event in Krizanke (Ljubljana, Slovenia) for the third year in a row, a popular summer festival »Disconautica« (Koper, Slovenia) featuring 1605 Main Floor for the second year in a row and with over 50.000 attending people. Furthermore the 15 astonishing releases and remixes already released in 2009 are the best proof, that Umek stays focused on his primary goal – to make high quality productions that stand out from the rest and to bring this music closer to people all around the world.
The year 2009 also brought a fresh breeze in Umek’s booking department and so his new booking agency is Bullitt Bookings from the USA, that also takes care of some of the biggest names, like Dubfire, Nic Fanciulli, Shlomi Aber, Davide Squillace and many others.

Last year's releases like Is it / Longer Trail, Destructible Enviroment, S Cream, Designed Persona, You Might Hear Nothing and the latest club hit Work This Data, have caught the attention of Armada, Hell Yeah, Tronic, Dataworx and other biggest labels of the music industry and judging by Umek's tracks »Hablando« and »Slap«, released on his own label 1605, by the enormous amount of upcoming releases and the second (and first on 1605 label) album with his 10 great tracks “Responding To Dynamic” (coming in spring 2010), Umek surely isn’t going to run out of creative fuel for quite some time.

However for Franccesco it’s not simply about the performance but more intrinsically about how the music plays a part in life and experience. Rising through the ranks of technician to audio engineer and producer, Luke soon completed his bachelors in productions from the University of Florida in 2005. After Gainesville’s music scene tapered off shortly after 2001 Luke found himself searching to reconnect and heading south to the heart of WMC territory in Miami Florida. MUM Presents Miami Sessions with: SQL - Episode 172

Rod B, Mareis & Garfunk Brings you Miami Undeground Movement

-In the electronic music scene, it’s often hard to decipher the fact from fiction.

Phrases like “innovative”, “cutting edge” or “next big thing” are often thrown around without much weight and more often than not, the hype often exceeds people’s ability to deliver where it counts the most: the dance floor.

But if you look at the career of rising star SQL, you’d see that any of those words and many more apply, without any unjustified hype.

At just 22-years-old, Pim Van Horssen has seen more success come his way than many will in a lifetime, with a list of releases as long as your arm as well as gigs in all corners of the globe, from the massive Universo Paralello in Brazil, the clubs in New Dehli and everything in between.

And while success is nothing new to Pim, 2009 is the year his talent came to the fore, with his smash hit Distorted Reality finding its way onto the playlists of the who’s who of the minimal world, including Richie Hawtin, Marco carola and eventually right to the way to No.1 on the Beatport charts.

Blending cutting edge minimal, techno and house with fat production, hypnotic grooves and unique view to the future of dance music, the sounds from the SQL studios are now in demand by imprints from throughout the globe, including SK Supreme, Traum, Tribal Vision, Open Records and more.

With international tours on the cards, a stunning live show and heaps more freshness on the way, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this young star of dance music has a very bright future indeed. Stayed tuned!

MUM & Radio Noise Presents: Miami Sessions with Nicole Moudaber Episode - 171

Rod B, Mareis & Garfunk Brings you Miami Undeground Movement

-

A true force to be reckoned with as a DJ and producer, Nicole Moudaber’s rise through the ranks of the DJ elite has been swift, purposeful and striking.

Propelled by her flawlessly executed, sleazy, edgy house and tough, soulful techno sound, she picked up no less than Carl Cox and Steve Lawler as early fans.

Carl snapped up her early tracks for INTEC and Steve featured her music on VIVa & iVAV.

Since then she’s supplied killer tracks for labels like 8Sided Dice, Kling Klong, Monique Musique and Waveform Recordings, while remixing names including Santos, Martin Eyer, Mauro Picotto and Fergie.

Pretty much a perfect start to an artist career that began relatively recently.

Hitting New York after a youth spent in Africa and the Middle East, Nicole initially explored her passion for electronic music as a promoter, bringing the NYC style parties she loved to Beirut for the first time, then booking huge acts for her Soundworx nights at London’s legendary Turnmills club and running Southeast Recordings.

But it was the decision to dive in and start to DJ and make music herself that was proven the most important. Once she unleashed her creativity, everything simply went ‘boom’.

Carl Cox identified her as exactly the kind of fresh talent he wanted to playing at his weekly nights at Space in Ibiza, where Nicole has since DJed regularly alongside him for the last 3 seasons.

Requests for guest mixes on both Carl and John Digweed’s internationally syndicated radio shows followed, as did the endorsement of Pete Tong, who named Nicole a rising star on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Selection.

Her tracks picked up the support of yet more DJ royalty like Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer, Loco Dice and Danny Tenaglia, who was so impressed when he DJed with Nicole that the two of them have been working together both in the studio and on throwing an incredible outdoor party at Ushuaia in Ibiza.

With further residencies in Ibiza - the place she now calls home – and Cologne, plus recent high profile gigs at Ministry of Sound and the SW4 festival in London plus the Dance.Here.Now Festival in New York, her reputation for groovy main room mastery has really taken hold.

Meanwhile plans for a launching a label of her own, plus a mix and tour for the hugely influential Global Underground series are all under way.

Miami Sessions presents Behind the Iron Curtain with Umek, Guest Dj Beltek -M.U.M Episode -169

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement

M.U.M & Noise Music Presents Miami Sessions with Anderson Noise @ Radio Noise - M.U.M Episode 160

Pioneer "is one that first opens or discover paths through unknown regions."

The career of DJ and producer Anderson Noise is a pioneer in electronic music from Brazil. Born in Belo Horizonte, Noise started slowly, as is the custom in his region, but never stopped to take some steps toward success.

In 1988, during the explosion of Acid House, started DJing in his hometown. Passionate about the profession, he often said that the role of DJ is move people. Followed by producing their own events from 1992, making room in the state capital for the proliferation of the electronic scene, still embryonic in place.

There were more than 40 parties produced, many in places like mental hospitals, shopping malls, car dealerships and historic buildings. The "Noise Family" became an institution, since in the event not only Anderson was involved. Mamma Noise, the mother of the DJ in person, was the hostess of the parties. Later Alvinho L Noise was excited with the turntables and boiled the dance floor next to his brother.

His first CD compilation, "Paralisia Cerebral"was released in 1996, while the dream of producing his own music became reality in the talented hands of Noise. In 1997 he was invited to include "Shantytown" in the "Electronic Music Brazil" the first CD of 100% national of the genre, released by Sony-Mercado Mundo Mix.

Miami Sessions presents Technasia live@Quartiere Latino, Italy-M.U.M Episode 139

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement

Technasia Biography

For thirteen years Technasia has created a unique east/west fusion that moves seamlessly from the Paris club scene, to the streets of Hong Kong, to the hippest techno venues in Europe. Founded by Charles Siegling and Amil Khan in 1996, Technasia thrived as a duo for almost a dozen years. Now, Charles has gone solo, taking Technasia into 2010 as a one-man project. Unlike a Hollywood divorce, the parting between Siegling and Khan is truly amicable. Hong Kong-based Khan retired from Technasia to spend time with his young family. “You have to live this scene every single day,” says Siegling, “It’s very consuming, Amil didn’t want that anymore.”

Despite the change, Siegling has always been the ‘front man’ in terms of DJing and performing live, so Technasia is as thrilling and full-bodied a live experience as ever. If anything, Siegling is even more determined to infuse every aspect of Technasia with his utter absorption in sound, the passion born of 25 years engrossed in electronic music. Born in Paris and raised in an 11th century chateau, Charles grew up listening to everything from Depeche Mode to Jimi Hendrix. His music-loving dad even introduced him to early British rave tunes. As a university student he continued his musical education the clubs of Paris listening to the likes of Derrick May and Robert Owens; and taking note of the records Laurent Garnier and DJ Deep played on their radio shows.

In the mid-90s Siegling, who did a degree in film studies, went to check out the Hong Kong cinema scene. There, a mutual friend introduced him to Amil Khan and after they discovered a shared taste in electronic music, Technasia was born. They chose to base Technasia and their record label Sino in Hong Kong because there was no scene there, no record shops, no underground, no infrastructure. It was initially a battle for survival, but the location is vital to the Technasia ethos of music as communication. “Language is THE ultimate barrier,” says Siegling. He strives to overcome the barrier in his own life by picking up languages wherever he goes – he speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and Italian, among others – but ultimately he chooses to communicate through sound. “Electronic music is the greatest language of all. No words, just the vibration, the emotion and the beat.”

Charles has a burning ambition to create music that transcends cultural barriers, and to captivate every audience. The proof of his success is in the list of clubs and festivals Technasia has played. Fans around the globe, from China, to Colombia, to the Czech Republic, know Technasia’s classic anthems including ‘Force’, ‘Oxide’ and ‘Evergreen’. And they know that every Technasia show takes the music to new heights. When DJing, Charles always plays on three decks, showcasing the old-fashioned arts of cutting and scratching. Live, Technasia takes audiences on an unforgettable ride. Charles literally becomes a one-man band, playing keyboards, percussion and acoustic instruments. He even sings. Anything to create irresistible energy and atmosphere. “I want my audience having fun,” explains Siegling. “Not falling asleep, or going off to the bar for a beer.”

The performance aspect of Technasia is complemented by artist albums ‘Future Mix’ and ‘Popsoda’ – which are modern classics. Siegling is also an outspoken promoter of young talent, using the Sino imprint as a launch pad for talent including Joris Voorn, Renato Cohen, Steve Rachmad and young Catalan producer Dosem. He has straightforward criteria for what makes a Sino artist: talent and individuality. Charles is refreshingly direct – he has no patience for industry politics – and he seeks out musicians who have a similar strength of character and clarity of purpose. “I share my knowledge with artists who deserve a push,” says Siegling. “So when they are ready to fly, they can do it on their own.”

Siegling is currently polishing the third Technasia album, due to be released mid-2010, and planning a huge tour which will take the new music to fans around the world. There is 12” single planned for spring, and fans can look forward to remixes from artists including Marc Romboy, Mauro Picotto and Renato Cohen later in the year. Right now, Siegling is in production overdrive: “My neighbours probably see me alone in the studio at 5AM, dancing my ass off!”
he jokes. One thing is certain: come 2010, he won’t be dancing alone anymore.

M.U.M & 1605 Sessions Presents Miami Sessions with Umek Live@Orange Club Augsburg Germany-M.U.M Episode 136

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement

M.U.M & FLOW:MNGMNT Proudly Presents "Miami Sessions with F.Sonik & Andrew Technique -M.U.M Episode 135

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement

F.SONIK   The name of F.Sonik continuously pops up on the wish lists of electronic music aficionados in the region. Launching career with the Ghettotek live-act, later joining SDJF initiative and Flow Management, he already established himself as an unique deejay who is not afraid of such challenges as combining Slovenia's landmark techno heritage with some progressive spices. He already transferred some of this who-dares-wins spirit in his own productions, Something New (ft. Tomy DeClerque) being the most successful so far. This track, which immediately gained support of Umek and was already played on BBC Radio 1, predicts the series of fresh releases in 2008. So you better watch out for this guy! Aleš Furlan alias F.Sonik became involved in electronic dance culture on account of one very innocent occurrence in his youth. And it’s a sole fault of his brother that he ended taming the decks, mixers and effects night after night. “It all started when he brought home some studio mixer and Akai sampler,” remembers F.Sonik “Just a few days later I knew I wanted to produce electronic and become a deejay and I was hooked ever since. I started gathering information about the scene, artists, clubs, music and the whole electronic movement. Living on the Slovenian Riviera it was natural to be influenced by Ambasada Gavioli club as I started attending Valentino Kanzyani’s matinees and performances of leading electronic artists on the regular basis.” It was his friend Alessio who helped him with the first steps: "He was caught by this bug well before me, so he already learned to mix and could thought me a thing or two. I still remember how I use to hang out at his parents house everyday struggling to beat-match the records. And after I started performing he even lent me his records." Shortly after that they teamed up for the live performances. "We've named ourselves Ghettotek. Alessio was mixing the records and I was in charge of putting in some effects. This way I got to perform in most of the hip Slovenian clubs even before my solo career really took off."

Thriving on a strong and globally accomplished techno heritage Slovenian electronic scene is still heavily directed by techno. But being influenced by the Global Underground music philosophy F.Sonik dared to go where only a few artists in the region dared before him – he decided he will combine the techno heritage with melodic progressive sounds: "Even Umek was there somewhere, but as he was pure techno deejay back then and I was more into progressive stuff, it were the likes of Sasha, Deep Dish and Steve Lawler that have inspired me the most," admits the young artist.

F.Sonik successfully transferred his unique vision of dance music, built on techno and blended with some emotionally rich proggy landscapes, into his own tunes. As a producer he gained the most attention with the track titled Something New, which he produced in collaboration with his musical guru Tomy DeClerque. “We’ve connected really good in the studio, so it was a really good feeling when Umek supported our first track including it in his Essential Mix even before it was officially released. That really inspired us and we already work on a bunch of new tracks,” announces F.Sonik...F.SONIK

ANDREW TECHNIQUE - biography

Be Ray Ya Book Hey, Can't Play the Piano, Luna Park and Fresh are just some productions which recently invested Andrew Technique as one of the hottest young electronic artists in the region. And it's not a small deal if we take in account he's determined to challenge the infamous Slovenian techno heritage and take it to the whole new level. When he's not abusing the decks and comps on his own, Andrew, a protégé of Flow Management and dedicated member of SDJF initiative, performs as a member of Foreplay!, Parallel Fusion (live) and R&A projects. Well, he sure came a long way so far. Especially if we bear in mind he grew up on metal guitar reefs.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

"It’s true. I'm an art junkie,” admits Andrew. “When I was a kid people thought I’d become a successful painter, actor, singer or whatever. But it was the music that attracted me the most for as long as I can remember. In business I believe in professionalism and dedication, but when it comes to producing and performing music I indulge in being lead by my feelings. And I’m very emotional. I can get goose bumps or even a tear in my eye listening to some great piece of music. I’m not ashamed to admit that. I do listen to the comments given by my friends and people that I personally believe they are credible critics. I respect good-intended critic, but I got where I am today mostly because I decided so and worked hard to reach some of my personal goals,” summarizes his career Andrej Šarkanj aka Andrew Technique.

Although as a master of his own destiny he almost abandoned his dream not so far ago. “Let’s just say I came to the major life-crossroad and had to decide what I wanted to do with life: I could have ended my music career right there and then or choose to channel all my free-time and energy into production and promotion of my own vision of dance music. It never was, and still isn’t, all roses. But now, that I finally get the positive feedback from the right people I’m happy I decided not to quit," explains Andrew with a tiny sparkle of satisfaction in his eyes. He made some big steps in 2007: he produced bunch of great fresh sounding tunes, his records are now being regularly played by the top deejays such as Umek and Valentino Kanzyani, some of his tracks were already broadcasted on BBC Radio 1 … But, regarding the strong competition, Andrew is aware that just a few of good releases will not bring him much.  So he doesn’t rest on early successes: "Dedication, sustain quality of releases and a bit of luck are key elements on which I build my future as an artist.”

It’s been more than a decade since he developed a passion for 4x4 beats. “I used to be into guitar music. I learned to play the piano, I joined the garage band as a teenager and I grew up on hard rock and metal,” smiles Andrew on not so distant memories. “During the high school period I came in touch with other genres, widened my musical spectrum and finally turned in totally different direction. I started listening to electronic stuff, learned how the music is selected, performed and produced and in a few years established myself as a tech-house deejay." Although some could label his sound more like unique mixture of minimal, electro and progressive elements. "We leave in a time of genre blending, so it’s hard to label one’s sound, anyway,” admits Andrew. "But those who follow my work do know I’ve always had a strong passion for organic African rhythms."

And how did he get his name? “Andrew was an obvious choice, just a translation of my civilian name. And I choose Technique since I was always very handy with stuff, I still work in a computer shop, MacGyver is a big hero of mine and the name also reflects what I do as an artist.” And the influences: "I listen to a lot of music and I got inspired by a lot of great artists along the way. I try to find something special in every piece of music and all musicians are mentors to me in a way. But the most important influence for me as an artist was and in a way still is our local super club Ambasada Gavioli. It was the place where I was introduced to electronic culture and where I experienced some great performances of leading global deejays.”

Andrew is also known as a “very friendly artist”. He's a member of SDJF initiative that is dedicated to constant development of the local electronic club scene and supporting young artists. And when he's not performing on his own, he abuses decks and comps as a member of Foreplay!, R&S and Parallel Fusion (live) projects: "There were also some others, but this things come and go and only the best stay. The basic idea behind collaborations is to get together with other artists, develop and share ideas or blend genres. And it's always more fun producing and performing music with other people than on your own."

As a producer he gets all the help he needs from his musical guru Tomy DeClerque. He established his name as part of Tomy or Zox combo on the house scene back in the 90's and is now successfully running his own studio that is second home to some of the hottest young producers in the region. Tomy and Andrew debuted on Kanzyani's Jesus Loved You label with the Obala EP in late 2007. Tomy also remixed Fresh which was included in Umek's Essential Mix and released on Circle Records: "Studio is my favorite place for spending free time. I go there most of the days and I try to channel my ideas, thoughts, wishes and feelings into the music." And since he's very passionate guy, there's a truckload of new records with Andrew's name on it planned for release in forthcoming months. "I'm already well established artist in the region, so now I'd like to spread my sound trough the rest of the Europe and elsewhere. There are many challenges I'd like to take, but the ultimate would be performing on another planet. I'm not kidding. I believe this is something I could achieve as an artist, so don't be surprised if you get a postcard from Mars or Venus someday."

M.U.M & 1605 Sessions Presents Miami Sessions with Umek Live@Nitza Club, Barceloa Spain- M.U.M Episode 132

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement
